Improvers Navigation
You’ve learned the basics. Now it’s time to put those skills to work.
Improvers Navigation takes a different approach to traditional navigation training. Rather than practising isolated exercises, we use real exploration to develop and refine navigation skills whilst discovering remarkable landscapes and hidden places that many walkers never visit.
Bodmin 101
Based on 101 Squares Around Bodmin Moor by Sheron Vowden, this project encourages participants to navigate, find and ‘bag’ the squares that make up Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.

It’s not always about “Jam First”… We also cross the border
Dartmoor 365
Based on John Hayward’s Dartmoor 365, this project explores the impressive 365 square miles of Dartmoor National Park in Devon.
What Will We Do?
Using the skills learned on the Beginner Navigation course, participants will continue to develop route planning, contour interpretation, compass work, relocation techniques and decision-making whilst navigating to find and “bag” individual squares.
Along the way, we’ll discover some of Cornwall and Devon’s hidden gems, from prehistoric remains and standing stones to industrial relics, forgotten settlements, hidden tors and lesser-known places that many walkers never visit.
These sessions are designed for walkers who have completed a Beginner Navigation course and would like regular opportunities to practise and develop their navigation skills in real-world environments across Cornwall and Devon.
