Navigation & Challenges
From following the crowd to finding your own path
Navigation is one of the most empowering outdoor skills you can learn. It gives you the confidence to explore new places, understand the landscape around you, and venture beyond the familiar path.
Whether you are completely new to map reading, looking to build your confidence, or to put your skills to the test, there is something here for you.
🧭 Beginner Navigation

Learn the fundamentals of map reading and navigation through practical, hands-on sessions in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Unlike traditional classroom-based learning, these sessions take place outdoors, where skills can be learned and applied in the landscape.
No previous experience is required; small groups.
Participants are welcome to bring their own map and compass, although equipment can be provided if required.
🏞️ Improvers Navigation

Already know the basics and looking for a reason to use them?
These sessions are designed for walkers with some navigation experience who want to build confidence through practical exploration.
Drawing inspiration from projects such as Dartmoor 365 and the Bodmin Moor 101, participants use maps and navigation skills to seek out points of interest hidden within the landscape.
Navigation becomes more than simply getting from A to B. It becomes a way of discovering places that might otherwise never be found.
🏆 Challenge Events

Challenge Walks range from classic moorland adventures and tors to long-distance trails and historic routes. Whether you’re looking for a personal challenge, training for an event or simply a rewarding day outdoors, there’s something here for you.
